MedEd: Bridging the communication gap between patients and physicians

To view the full case study please visit the Project Website

OVERVIEW:

Previous statistics has shown that the healthcare industry spends a vast amount of money on hospital stays and doctor visits. While both are essential for treatment, research awareness of the after hospital care instructions amongst patients reduces the likelihood of redundant visits. As a result, patient education is an important factor in understanding treatment procedures and decreasing the fear or anxiety experienced by a patient during his or her clinical visit. Patient education is commonly clarified by providing handouts in the waiting area of a clinic or hospital. The informative yet heavy text based handouts, become a burden on the patient to assimilate the substantial amount of information before entering the clinic.

Another approach to patient education may include verbal instructions and information given by doctors before starting the diagnosis and treatment. It claimed, however, that humans usually remember only around 20% of what they hear. And remember around a 90% of what they do. (Anderson et al., 2015). Respectively, patients will be concerned about independently maintaining their health after the treatment, leading him/her to call many times for a follow-up or even schedule another visit

GOAL:

Integrating a patient education system, which can provide a notable engaging learning experience for patients pre-treatment and post-treatment. In short, the project aims at creating a patient education platform, available on several devices that is easy to use and comprehend. Not only inside the clinic, with the doctor supervision, but also individually at home for example.
